Man and the Stars

When man looks to the stars,
he sees their growing hands reach for his face
His pupils swallow his eyes whole
and the wind whips his skin dry
He lifts his hands to touch the sky's own,
to stand on level footing with its splendour
But when he stares for too long
or pulls the sky towards him too closely,
he finds the weight of the stars will begin to sit on his shoulders
until he is forced to fall to his knees
and look down to Hell to fear its blazing punishment
For he is just a man
and no man can carry the stars on his shoulders
